Eating Disorders

What are Eating Disorders?

Eating disorders are serious and complex mental health conditions that affect a person’s relationship with food, body image, and self-worth. They can involve patterns of restrictive eating, bingeing, purging, or obsessive behaviours around weight and shape.

Common types include Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia Nervosa, Binge Eating Disorder, and Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID). These disorders can impact physical health, emotional wellbeing, and relationships.

At Trinity Psychology, we provide compassionate, evidence-based support to individuals experiencing eating disorders and disordered eating behaviours. We create a non-judgemental space to explore the underlying emotional, psychological, and social factors contributing to each person’s experience.

Signs and Impacts of Eating Disorders Eating disorders can present in many different ways, and not all individuals will show the same signs. Some common symptoms include: Preoccupation with food, calories, or weight Extreme restriction of food intake or rigid eating routines Episodes of binge eating, often followed by guilt or shame Purging behaviours such as vomiting or over-exercising Intense fear of gaining weight or distorted body image Weight changes or fluctuations Mood swings, anxiety, or withdrawal from social situations Eating disorders can lead to serious medical complications if left untreated. Early support and intervention can significantly improve recovery outcomes.

Assessment Process Our psychologists conduct a sensitive and comprehensive assessment to understand the emotional, behavioural, and physical components of the eating disorder. This includes: A thorough clinical interview Exploration of eating behaviours and body image concerns Review of medical and mental health history Identification of co-occurring conditions (such as anxiety or trauma) Discussion of the impact on daily life and wellbeing Where appropriate, we collaborate with dietitians, GPs, or medical professionals to ensure safe and coordinated care.
