Alcohol and Other Drugs (AOD)

AOD refers to concerns related to the use, misuse, or dependence on alcohol and other substances such as prescription medications, cannabis, stimulants, and illicit drugs. Substance use can affect a person’s physical health, mental wellbeing, relationships, work or study, and overall quality of life.

At Trinity Psychology, we provide non-judgemental, evidence-based support for individuals and families affected by substance use. We understand that AOD issues are often linked to underlying emotional distress, trauma, or mental health conditions, and we take a compassionate, holistic approach to recovery.

Signs of AOD Concerns AOD-related challenges can look different from person to person, but common signs include: Regular or increasing substance use Difficulty cutting back or stopping despite wanting to Changes in mood, motivation, or sleep Neglecting responsibilities or withdrawing from relationships Using substances to cope with stress, anxiety, or trauma Physical health issues related to substance use Risky behaviours while under the influence Experiencing withdrawal symptoms or cravings At Trinity Psychology, we support clients in recognising the patterns and underlying causes of their substance use and work together to build sustainable pathways forward.

Diagnostic Process for AOD Issues Assessment involves understanding the full context of an individual's experience with substance use, including: Clinical interviews exploring the patterns, frequency, and impact of substance use Exploration of emotional, psychological, and environmental factors contributing to use Assessment of co-occurring mental health conditions such as anxiety, depression, or trauma Screening tools to determine level of risk and inform tailored support planning We prioritise safety, confidentiality, and trust in every assessment. Where appropriate, referrals to specialist medical or detox services can be discussed as part of a coordinated care plan.

Treatment Options for AOD Concerns At Trinity Psychology, we use an integrative, trauma-informed approach to AOD support. Our treatment options include: Counselling and Psychological Therapy We offer individual therapy to help clients explore the emotional and psychological drivers of substance use. This may include trauma processing, building emotional regulation skills, and developing healthier coping mechanisms. Modalities may include CBT, ACT, and DBT.
