Attention Deficit / Hyperactivity Disorder

What is ADHD?
Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects concentration, impulse control, and activity levels. It can impact academic, occupational, and social functioning across all ages.

Trinity Psychology conducts comprehensive ADHD assessments using evidence-based tools and behavioural observations. We work collaboratively with families, educators, and healthcare professionals to provide detailed reports and tailored support plans.

Signs of ADHD ADHD (Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder) is a common neurodevelopmental condition that affects both children and adults. It can impact focus, self-control, and activity levels. The signs vary between individuals and are usually grouped into three main types: Inattentive – Difficulty focusing, easily distracted, forgetful, often disorganised. Hyperactive-Impulsive – Fidgeting, restlessness, excessive talking, trouble waiting or staying seated. Combined – A mix of inattentive and hyperactive-impulsive traits. Children may show signs through daydreaming, losing things, or difficulty following instructions. Teens and adults may experience poor time management, impulsive decisions, or trouble staying organised. At Trinity Psychology, we offer caring and comprehensive ADHD assessments to help individuals understand their challenges and build effective support strategies.

Diagnostic Process for ADHD Diagnosing ADHD involves a thorough and evidence-based assessment process that takes into account various aspects of an individual's functioning. This includes behavioural observations, a detailed developmental and medical history, input from caregivers or educators when relevant, and the use of standardised rating scales. The most crucial component of the diagnostic process is the clinical interview, which allows the psychologist to explore symptoms in context, assess their impact on daily life, and rule out other possible causes. The assessment is guided by the criteria outlined in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5), which provides a structured framework to ensure consistency and accuracy in diagnosis. At Trinity Psychology, ADHD assessments are conducted by qualified psychologists with expertise in neurodevelopmental conditions. In some cases, collaboration with a psychiatrist may be recommended to support diagnosis and explore medication options when appropriate.

Treatment Options for ADHD At Trinity Psychology, we take a holistic and evidence-based approach to ADHD treatment, recognising that each individual’s experience is unique. Effective management of ADHD often involves a combination of therapeutic strategies, education, lifestyle support, and, where appropriate, medication. Counselling and Therapy Psychological therapy plays a central role in helping individuals understand and manage the emotional and behavioural aspects of ADHD. Our psychologists offer tailored support to address low self-esteem, frustration, anxiety, and relationship difficulties that often accompany ADHD. We use Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and other structured approaches to help individuals reframe unhelpful thought patterns, develop practical coping strategies, and build executive functioning skills such as planning, organisation, and self-regulation. Psychoeducation and Self-Awareness Understanding ADHD is empowering. We provide education around the condition to help individuals recognise how ADHD presents in their lives. By developing insight into their unique strengths and challenges, clients are better equipped to advocate for themselves and implement strategies that support day-to-day functioning and long-term wellbeing. Medication Management While not necessary for everyone, medication can be an effective part of ADHD treatment. Stimulant medications work by increasing neurotransmitter activity to improve focus and reduce impulsivity and hyperactivity. Non-stimulant options are also available for those who may not respond well to stimulants. Medication can only be prescribed by a qualified psychiatrist. We collaborate with referring professionals when medication is considered beneficial. Assistive Technology and Organisational Tools Digital tools can offer practical day-to-day support. We recommend smartphone apps, calendars, reminders, and task-management systems to help individuals with ADHD manage time, reduce overwhelm, and stay organised. Support Groups and ADHD Coaching Engaging with others who share similar experiences can provide encouragement and insight. We encourage participation in ADHD support groups and communities where appropriate. Additionally, ADHD coaching can provide personalised, goal-oriented guidance to help individuals stay focused, build routines, and overcome everyday challenges. Lifestyle and Wellbeing Healthy lifestyle habits can significantly support ADHD symptom management. Regular exercise, balanced nutrition, adequate sleep, and mindfulness or stress-reduction techniques can enhance attention, mood, and emotional regulation. Our team supports clients in creating realistic and sustainable routines that promote overall wellbeing.

ADHD is a common yet complex neurodevelopmental condition that benefits from a personalised and comprehensive approach. At Trinity Psychology, we believe in combining modern diagnostic tools with tailored therapeutic support to help individuals gain deeper insight into their unique experiences. Through a blend of education, evidence-based therapy, and practical strategies, we empower our clients to manage symptoms, build on their strengths, and enhance their overall quality of life.
