Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD)

What is Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD)?

Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) is a complex mental health condition that affects how individuals regulate emotions, relate to others, and perceive themselves. People with BPD often experience intense emotional responses, difficulty managing relationships, and a fluctuating sense of self.

At Trinity Psychology, we provide compassionate, evidence-based support to individuals living with BPD. Our goal is to help clients build emotional stability, develop healthier relationships, and foster a more grounded and consistent sense of self.

Signs of Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) While experiences vary between individuals, common signs of BPD include: Intense, rapidly shifting emotions Fear of abandonment and efforts to avoid real or perceived rejection Difficulty maintaining stable relationships Impulsive behaviours (e.g. overspending, binge eating, substance use) Unstable self-image or sense of identity Chronic feelings of emptiness or worthlessness Periods of intense anger, irritability, or mood swings Self-harming behaviours or suicidal thoughts Our team recognises that these behaviours often stem from deep emotional pain and works with clients in a non-judgemental, supportive environment to explore the underlying causes.

Diagnostic Process for BPD Diagnosing BPD involves a comprehensive psychological assessment that includes: In-depth clinical interviews exploring emotional patterns, personal history, and relationship dynamics Use of validated psychological assessments and screening tools Consideration of co-occurring conditions such as anxiety, depression, or trauma-related disorders Collaborative discussion to ensure the client feels informed, understood, and supported throughout the process At Trinity Psychology, our psychologists take a respectful, client-centred approach to diagnosis, aiming to reduce stigma and empower clients through self-understanding.

Treatment Options for BPD Effective treatment for BPD involves structured, evidence-based therapies that focus on emotional regulation, interpersonal skills, and self-awareness. Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) DBT is one of the most well-supported treatments for BPD. It combines mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotional regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness strategies to help clients manage intense emotions and improve their relationships. Mentalisation-Based Therapy (MBT) MBT helps individuals better understand their own thoughts and emotions and those of others, improving emotional insight and social connection. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) CBT can assist in identifying and reframing unhelpful thought patterns, building emotional awareness, and developing coping skills. Trauma-Informed Care Since many individuals with BPD have experienced early life trauma or attachment disruptions, our therapists integrate trauma-informed approaches that prioritise safety, trust, and empowerment. Relationship and Communication Skills We support clients in strengthening their interpersonal relationships through assertiveness training, boundary setting, and communication skills development. Support for Families and Loved Ones BPD can impact the entire support system. Where appropriate, we offer guidance to family members or partners to help them better understand the condition and respond with empathy and support.

Living with Borderline Personality Disorder can be incredibly challenging, but with the right support, recovery and personal growth are possible. At Trinity Psychology, we believe in each person’s capacity for change and offer a compassionate, structured approach to help clients navigate their emotions, improve relationships, and develop a stable sense of self.
