Depression
What is Depression?
Depression is a common yet serious mental health condition that affects how a person feels, thinks, and functions. It is more than just feeling sad—it can lead to persistent low mood, loss of interest in activities, and difficulties in daily life. Depression can affect anyone and often arises from a combination of genetic, psychological, and environmental factors.

At Trinity Psychology, we understand that depression can feel overwhelming and isolating. Our approach is warm, respectful, and evidence-based, supporting individuals to understand their experience, reduce symptoms, and reconnect with meaning and purpose.
Signs and Impacts of Depression Symptoms of depression vary from person to person, but commonly include: Persistent sadness, emptiness, or hopelessness Loss of interest or pleasure in activities once enjoyed Low energy, fatigue, or lack of motivation Changes in appetite, weight, or sleep patterns Difficulty concentrating or making decisions Feelings of guilt, worthlessness, or self-blame Withdrawal from relationships and social activities Thoughts of self-harm or suicide (in more severe cases) Depression can affect personal relationships, work or study performance, and physical health. At Trinity Psychology, we support people in understanding these impacts and developing personalised strategies for recovery.
Assessment Process for Depression Our assessment process helps build a clear picture of each client’s experience. This may involve: A clinical interview exploring current symptoms, personal history, and contributing factors Screening tools and questionnaires to guide diagnosis and track severity Exploration of underlying stressors, belief systems, and patterns of coping Consideration of co-occurring conditions such as anxiety, trauma, or physical health challenges We work collaboratively to establish goals for treatment and identify strengths that support recovery.
Treatment Options for Depression At Trinity Psychology, we offer evidence-based treatment for depression that is tailored to each individual’s needs and circumstances. These may include: Psychological Therapy Our psychologists create a safe, non-judgemental space to explore the emotional and psychological factors contributing to depression. We support clients in identifying negative thinking patterns, processing difficult emotions, and developing helpful coping strategies. We commonly use therapeutic approaches such as: Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) to challenge unhelpful thoughts and behaviours Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) to promote values-based living Interpersonal Therapy (IPT) to improve relationship patterns and communication Mindfulness-based strategies to build present-moment awareness and emotional regulation Psychoeducation and Insight Understanding depression can be empowering. We help clients make sense of their experience and reduce self-blame by exploring how depression affects mood, thoughts, behaviour, and biology. Behavioural Activation Depression often leads to withdrawal from enjoyable or meaningful activities. We support clients in gradually reintroducing structure, routine, and positive experiences that build motivation and improve mood. Lifestyle and Holistic Support We emphasise the role of sleep, physical activity, nutrition, and social connection in supporting mental wellbeing. Our team works with clients to create achievable goals that align with their lifestyle and values. Referral for Medication While not necessary for all, some individuals benefit from a combination of therapy and antidepressant medication. We can refer clients to trusted GPs or psychiatrists if this option is being considered.
Depression is treatable, and recovery is possible. At Trinity Psychology, we support individuals in reconnecting with hope, self-worth, and meaning through evidence-based, compassionate care.
