Complex Trauma

What is Complex Trauma?

Complex trauma refers to repeated or prolonged exposure to traumatic events, often beginning in early life. These experiences may include emotional, physical, or sexual abuse, neglect, domestic violence, or other chronic disruptions to a person's sense of safety and connection. Unlike a single-event trauma, complex trauma deeply affects self-perception, relationships, and emotional regulation over time.

At Trinity Psychology, we understand that the effects of complex trauma are layered and lasting. Our approach is compassionate, trauma-informed, and centred on helping individuals feel safe, understood, and supported in their healing journey.

Signs and Impacts of Complex Trauma Complex trauma can affect many aspects of a person's life. Signs may include: Ongoing difficulties with trust, intimacy, or boundaries Intense emotional responses (e.g. anger, fear, shame) Chronic feelings of emptiness or disconnection Flashbacks, nightmares, or dissociation Low self-worth or persistent negative beliefs about oneself Difficulty regulating emotions or coping with stress Patterns of self-harm, substance use, or self-destructive behaviours At Trinity Psychology, we acknowledge the courage it takes to face these challenges and provide a space for recovery at each client’s own pace.

Assessment Process for Complex Trauma We take a sensitive and thorough approach to assessment, which may include: A detailed clinical interview exploring life history, trauma experiences, and current symptoms Exploration of attachment patterns, emotional functioning, and relationship dynamics Use of trauma-informed screening tools to support understanding and care planning Identification of strengths, coping styles, and resilience factors Our psychologists work collaboratively with clients to establish safety, understand their experiences, and develop personalised treatment goals.

Treatment Options for Complex Trauma Healing from complex trauma requires a patient, flexible, and supportive approach. At Trinity Psychology, we offer: Trauma-Informed Psychological Therapy We provide a safe therapeutic environment where individuals can explore their trauma history without fear of judgement. Building trust and a sense of safety is our first priority. Our clinicians use evidence-based modalities such as: Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (TF-CBT) Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) for emotional regulation and distress tolerance Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR), where appropriate Sensorimotor and Attachment-based approaches for body-based and relational healing Psychoeducation and Empowerment We support clients in understanding how trauma has affected their brain, body, and behaviour—empowering them to reclaim agency and reduce feelings of shame or confusion. Emotional Regulation and Coping Strategies We teach practical skills to manage flashbacks, dissociation, and intense emotions, helping clients feel more grounded and in control. Building a Sense of Identity and Connection Complex trauma often disrupts a person’s self-image and ability to connect with others. We assist clients in rediscovering their values, strengths, and capacity for safe relationships. Holistic and Collaborative Support Where appropriate, we work alongside other healthcare providers (e.g. GPs, psychiatrists, caseworkers) to ensure coordinated care tailored to each client’s needs.

Healing from complex trauma is not about “getting over it,” but about rebuilding safety, trust, and self-worth over time. At Trinity Psychology, we walk alongside individuals with empathy, professionalism, and hope—supporting each step of the journey toward healing and growth.
